Modern toners have evolved: they restore pH, remove lingering impurities, hydrate, refine texture, and deliver active ingredients. Pick a toner for your skin (hydrating, balancing, or exfoliating) and apply after cleansing, before serums and moisturiser.
Face Toner: What Does It Do & Why Should You Use One?

If there’s one product that’s had a serious glow up in the skincare world, it’s toner. For years, toners had a bit of a bad reputation seen as harsh liquids that stripped the skin and left it feeling tight. But thankfully, things have changed. Modern toners are nothing like those of the past.
Today’s formulations are packed with nourishing ingredients that can balance, hydrate and prep your skin for the rest of your routine. If you’ve ever wondered “Do I really need a toner the answer is yes, and here’s why.
What Exactly Is a Toner?
Think of toner as the bridge between cleansing and moisturising. After cleansing, your skin is clean, but it can also be slightly disrupted and your pH balance might be off, traces of cleanser, oil or makeup can linger on the skin’s surface. A good toner restores harmony. It removes any last impurities, rebalances your skin’s natural pH and creates the perfect canvas for serums and moisturisers to absorb more effectively. In essence it’s a light liquid formula that refines and refreshes your skin, while delivering targeted ingredients that support your specific skin goals.
The Evolution of Toners
Once upon a time, toners were mainly designed to degrease the skin and they often contained high levels of alcohol aimed at oily, acne-prone complexions. The result? Redness, dryness, and irritation for most skin types. But skincare science has evolved dramatically. Now toners are formulated with hydrating , soothing botanicals, and exfoliating acids that gently refine without stripping. They’ve become an active step in your routine and depending on which one you choose, they can hydrate, calm, exfoliate, brighten, or even tighten pores. This is why toners have re-earned their place on the bathroom shelf and why I recommend them to nearly all of my clients.
Why Should You Use a Toner?
Here are the key benefits that make toner an essential step:
- Restores pH Balance
Cleansing can sometimes disturb the skin’s natural acid mantle. A balanced pH keeps your skin barrier strong helping it lock in moisture and defend against environmental aggressors. A good toner restores that balance within seconds.
- Enhances Absorption
Toners help your skin act like a sponge. By lightly hydrating and prepping the surface, they allow your serums and moisturisers to penetrate more effectively. If you’ve ever felt like your products “just sit” on your skin, toner can be the missing step that changes everything.
- Hydrates & Plumps
Hydrating toners containing ingredients like lacti acid and botanicals that infuse the skin with moisture. This leaves your complexion softer, dewier, and more comfortable especially if you’re prone to dryness or tightness after cleansing.
- Refines Pores & Texture
While toners can’t physically “shrink” pores, they do help keep them clear of debris, oil, and dead skin cells. The result is a smoother, more refined texture and fewer visible blackheads.
- Adds Active Ingredients
Many modern toners are now treatment products in their own right. Some include gentle exfoliating acids like glycolic or lactic acid for brightening, others include peptides or antioxidants for anti-ageing benefits. In short, your toner can do a lot more than you think!
Choosing the Right Toner for Your Skin Type
Not all toners are created equal. Choosing the right one for your skin type is key to seeing great results.
For Dry or Dehydrated Skin
Look for a hydrating toner that replenishes lost moisture. Ingredients like lactic acid and botanicals are your best friends here. They’ll plump and soothe the skin without any irritation.
For Oily or Combination Skin
Opt for a balancing toner that helps control shine and clear congestion. Look for niacinamide or salicylic acid to gently clarify without stripping. For Dull or Pigmented Skin Try a toner with AHAs (like glycolic or lactic acid) to gently exfoliate and brighten your complexion. These help remove dead skin cells, revealing the glow beneath. How to Use a Toner (Properly)
Using toner isn’t complicated, but there’s a right way to do it to maximise its benefits.
- Cleanse first. Start with your usual cleanser to remove makeup, oil, and impurities.
- Apply your toner.
- Pour a few drops into a cotton pad and sweep it across your face, neck, and décolleté, or
- Apply it directly into your hands and gently pat onto the skin (my personal favourite method for hydrating toners).
- Let it absorb. Wait a few seconds for it to sink in you’ll feel your skin instantly refreshed.
- Follow with your serum and moisturiser. This is where toner really shines helping your next steps work harder for you.
- Use morning and/or night. Depending on the type of toner, you can use it twice daily. If it’s an exfoliating acid toner, use it just once a day (or every other day) to avoid over-exfoliation.
