How to Layer Your Skincare in the Correct Order

Here I want to address one of the most commonly asked questions in the skincare community: “What order should I do my skincare?” Skin layering is an art and science, and getting it right can significantly enhance the benefits of your products. So, let’s dive deep into the world of skincare layering order to help you achieve that radiant glow!

Understanding the Basics

Before we delve into the specifics, it’s essential to grasp the fundamental concept of how to layer skincare. The general rule of thumb is to apply products from the thinnest to the thickest consistency. This ensures that each product penetrates effectively and doesn’t get blocked by heavier ones. So, what order does skincare go in? Let’s break it down.

1. Cleanser

The first step to any skincare regimen is cleansing. It prepares your skin to absorb the subsequent products. Always start with a clean slate!

2. Toner

After cleansing, a toner helps balance your skin’s pH and remove any residual impurities. Consider it a primer for the skincare products that follow.

3. Serums

Here’s where many people get a bit confused: How to layer serums. If you’re layering serums, start with the lightest one, like a Hydrating Serum, followed by more substantial, treatment-focused ones. Layering serums ensures you’re getting all the active ingredients right where they need to be. Most of your Environ serums can be ‘cocktailed together’ making a quicker application.

4. Eye Cream

The skin around your eyes is delicate and requires special care. Apply your eye cream before heavier products to ensure its active ingredients can penetrate effectively.

5. Moisturiser

A moisturizer seals in the products applied before and provides hydration. Remember, even if you have oily skin, don’t skip this step!

6. Sunscreen (AM)

Sunscreen is non-negotiable in the morning. UV rays can harm your skin, and to protect it, always apply sunscreen as the last step in your morning routine.

7. Oils (PM)

If you’re using facial oils, these should be applied after moisturizing in the evening. They help lock in moisture and can provide additional nourishing benefits.

Tips and Tricks

  • Wait Between Layers: Give each product a minute or two to absorb before moving to the next. This ensures your skin gets the full benefits.
  • Less is More: Remember, you don’t need to use a ton of each product. A little often goes a long way.
  • Consistency Matters: When considering the order to apply skin care products, always move from thinnest to thickest consistency.

FAQs

Q: What order should skincare go in at night?

A: The order is mostly the same, but you can skip the sunscreen and include products like facial oils or overnight masks.

Q: How to do skin care in order when using masks?

A: It really depends on the mask whether you are washing off after 20-60 mins or leaving it on overnight. If washing it off then the order would be Cleanse, Toner, Mask, Rinse, Serum/Moisturiser application.

If sleeping the mask the order would be: Cleanse, Tone, Serums/Eye Gels, Moisturiser, Mask.
